Józef Euzebiusz Chmielewski ps. „Aleksander” (1920-1950)
Urodził się 5 marca 1920 w Pińczowie. Był uczniem pińczowskiego gimnazjum, harcerzem. Jesienią 1938 r. rozpoczął studia w Szkole Głównej Handlowej w Warszawie. W czasie wojny prowadził kilka kompletów tajnego nauczania na poziomie szkoły średniej. Próbował stworzyć tajne nauczanie politechniczne i uniwersyteckie w Kielcach. Działał w konspiracji ruchu narodowego, był zastępcą szefa działu politycznego V Okręgu NSZ, pełnił funkcję oficera oświatowego-wychowawczego Brygady Świętokrzyskiej. Redagował także pismo brygady pisma „ W marszu i w boju”.
Po wojnie pozostał w kraju i kierował propagandą Okręgu Kieleckiego NSZ. Był aresztowany i zwolniony w 1945 roku. W grudniu wyjechał wraz z kilkoma osobami do amerykańskiej strefy okupacyjnej, z której powrócił w styczniu 1946. Wkrótce został ponownie aresztowany razem z Marianem Łagowskim, Bogusławem Denkiewiczem i Ludwikiem Wilkiem. Siedział w warszawskim więzieniu na Mokotowie. Miał dwie rozprawy sądowe. Druga była wniesiona przez prokuratora jako rewizja do procesu. Z więzienia wyszedł 2 lipca 1947 roku na mocy amnestii.
Jesienią 1947 został przyjęty na trzeci rok studiów Wydziału Prawa Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego. Równocześnie kontynuował przedwojenne studia na SGH w Warszawie. Wiosną 1948 roku był studentem 4 semestru na SGH. Udzielał się w organizacjach studenckich. W czasie studiów pracował zarobkowo w Instytucie Gospodarki Narodowej w Warszawie, a później w Centrali Spółdzielni Spożywców „Społem” w Warszawie. W kwietniu 1949r. został kierownikiem referatu CSS Społem. Po raz trzeci został aresztowany prawdopodobnie w sierpniu 1949 r. Siedział w więzieniu w Kielcach bez wyroku sądowego.
22 maja 1950 r. jego siostra, Zofia, otrzymała zawiadomienie o śmierci brata. Dwa dni później ekshumowała ciało z kieleckiego cmentarza na Piaskach. W oświadczeniu jako przyczynę śmierci podano gruźlicę. Przy ekshumacji siostra widziała wokół szyi Józefa mocną, ciemną pręgę gdy przenosiła ciało wraz z mężem z prostej trumny więziennej do trumny przywiezionej przez rodzinę. Świadczyłoby to o tym, że Józef Chmielewski został w więzieniu powieszony. Został pochowany na cmentarzu w Pińczowie.

Józef Euzebiusz Chmielewski, pseudonym “Aleksander”, was born on March 5, 1920, in Pińczów. He was a student at the Pińczów lower secondary school and a scout. In the autumn of 1938, he began his studies at the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH). During the war, he conducted several secret underground teaching courses at the secondary school level. He also attempted to establish underground polytechnic and university courses in Kielce. He was active in the underground national movement, serving as the deputy head of the political department of the 5th District of the NSZ, and held the position of educational and instructional officer of the Holy Cross Mountains Brigade (Brygada Świętokrzyska). He also edited the brigade’s magazine, “W marszu i w boju” (On the March and in Battle).
After the war, he remained in the country and directed the propaganda operations for the Kielce District of the NSZ. He was arrested and subsequently released in 1945. In December, he left with several other individuals for the American zone of occupation, from which he returned in January 1946. Shortly thereafter, he was arrested again, along with Marian Łagowski, Bogusław Denkiewicz, and Ludwik Wilk. He was held in the Warsaw Mokotów prison. He underwent two court trials; the second was brought forward by the prosecutor as a judicial review (appeal) of the initial trial. He was released from prison on July 2, 1947, under the amnesty.
In the autumn of 1947, he was admitted to the third year of studies at the Faculty of Law of the University of Warsaw. At the same time, he resumed his pre-war studies at the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH). By the spring of 1948, he was a student in his 4th semester at SGH and actively participated in student organizations. During his studies, he worked to support himself at the Institute of National Economy in Warsaw, and later at the Headquarters of the „Społem” Consumers’ Cooperative in Warsaw. In April 1949, he became a section head at the CSS „Społem”. He was arrested for the third time, likely in August 1949. He was held in the prison in Kielce without a court sentence.
On May 22, 1950, his sister, Zofia, received a notification of her brother’s death. Two days later, she exhumed the body from the Piaski cemetery in Kielce. The official statement cited tuberculosis as the cause of death. During the exhumation, while moving the body with her husband from a basic prison coffin into a coffin brought by the family, the sister saw a thick, dark welt around Józef’s neck. This would indicate that Józef Chmielewski had been hanged while in prison. He was buried at the cemetery in Pińczów.
Józef Chmielewski is commemorated on the Memorial Wall of the OMPiO (Patriotic and Civic Education Centre).
